Flashcards help parents and teachers to have an early intervention in the child’s development, children can learn phonics, sound out words, practice identifying letters, grammar etc.

One of the primary ways to use the cards and catch the children attention is by showing motivation to your child, pick a card and by pointing at the picture say out loud what it is. Do this several times.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Try to use the cards depending on the environment that is surrounding you. E.g. If there is a meal time use the food cards, if you are coloring use the color cards, this will help the child to connect the environment with their cognitive skills.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Be aware that the first time that you will use your cards with your child, expect him/her to just watch you, do not expect immediate repetition.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Once the child starts noticing the purpose of the cards, now you can have the child repeating after you what the card says. Try to make the learning fun, say the word in many different tones, high, low, funny, obscure, tiny voice, and deep voice.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Try clapping your hands for each noun given to the child. The clapping should be done for each syllable within the noun phonemes shown in the card.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Pick one of your child’s favorite stuff animal or animated figure and play pretend. Pretend the figure is wondering what is in the card that way the child and you can retell what the card says.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Guessing: Depending on the child’s age you can start with one card, show the card to the child, and then remove it from sight. Ask the child to close his/her eyes, pick out a different card or you can pick out the same one. Have the child to open his/her eyes, and ask if that’s the card you held previously. If the card is wrong have the child to tell you what was the card you held before, if is right you can give the card to the child.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Make bingo sheets with blank pieces of paper you can put as many figures you would like on the bingo set. Shuffle the cards and have fun playing bingo with your child.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

You and your family can play Simon says with the flashcard sets, it will be fun and will motivate the child to internalized the new language.

I have really enjoyed the fact that the cards gave me the opportunity of learning words from a different language with my son, having fun and being interactive with each other.
